The Mercer family business has been involved in agriculture since the early 1930’s. It has grown and adapted over the years to maintain its position at the forefront of modern agricultural and estate use. We provide a set of farming and estate services which we can build into an individually tailored package to help your farm estate.
We can farm the land for you through various arrangements such as FBT’s, Partnerships and Contract Farming arrangements. These will free up your time and capital whilst maintaining as much or as little involvement in the farm as you wish.
We can also offer other services:
- Agronomy (soil management and crop production)
- Crop Storage
- Estate Management
- Group purchasing and selling
- Farming Partnerships/Contract Farming
In short we can tailor the package to fit your individual needs, to suit you and your property.

Agronomy

Proper soil management can improve crop yields by enhancing the quality of the soil. This is achieved through analysis and techniques including crop rotation, crop management, correct fertilisation and effective weed control. We can provide the analysis and advise on the techniques that will improve your crop yields for both arable and vegetable farming.
Crop Storage

We have a total storage capacity of 33,000 tonnes offering specialist grain and root storage. Many of these stores are fully environmentally controlled, insulated with drive on floors. All are kept and maintained to a modern standard and comply with all the latest legislation and insurance practices to meet the demanding requirements of the modern day customer. We can offer a variety of stores to suit many purposes.
Estate Management

We have considerable experience in estate and woodland management. This encompasses various woodland and environmental schemes, particularly countryside stewardship. It also covers 10 years experience in obtaining planning permissions for a wide variety of residential office and other commercial uses for redundant agricultural buildings. We have always costed and monitored our business very carefully and would be able to provide a good overall perspective for anyone wanting to reappraise their operation. We welcome people to come and see what we have done with our common sense, practical approach.
We have planted over 40,000 trees on our land, which involves 200 acres of woodland. We won two tenders for the National Forest Scheme and recently sowed 51 kilometres of field margins. We regularly undertake environmental audits and farm in an environmentally sensitive manner.
On the property side we have always looked for alternative uses and have various residential and commercial projects in progress and have been successful with some of these in obtaining the RDP funding.
Group Purchasing & Selling

We can offer an introduction into an innovative supply chain management and marketing organisation. Some years ago, we formed a company called Farmconnect to source and sell our products in a more efficient manner. This has recently merged with Farmcare to form CFTG, which now purchases and markets on behalf of 130,000 acres. This enables us to get more purchasing and marketing power in the market place and enables us to compete with the pressures of modern day farming and commodity production.
Farming Partnerships / Contract Farming

We offer structured arrangements to suit the landowner; whether it is farm business tenancies, joint ventures, contract farming or whatever else may be suitable. It is your land; we can structure what you want.
We have proven ability in this area and welcome you visit or call if you think we can help. We have formed various farming arrangements with clients, ranging from straight farm business tenancies through to contract farming. We are then able to offer the landowner an entrepreneurial farming solution carried out in a positive environmental manner. We have knowledge of a wide range of enterprise schemes and estate management practices. We have found that not only does the estate get a better rental equivalent than the landowner was achieving originally but they also free up working capital and their management time.
The farms all retain their individual identity and are treated in sympathy with the environment. Careful attention is paid to the economics of production ensuring that there are sufficient resources to maintain and improve the infrastructure. This enables us to provide a good return for the landowner whilst earning enough to look after the land properly. We always endeavour to farm in a manner that we are proud of. We offer sound practices supported by excellent professional advice where necessary but are very open minded and flexible in our approach. This enables us to develop a farming system around the wishes of the landlord and accommodate any other activities that occur on the estate. We can also offer administration services.
