Philanthropy

Mercer Farming has always supported local charities and the directors of the company are heavily involved in philanthropic work.

Roger Mercer is Chairman of Trustees through Lichfield Cathedral Trust where he helps the trustees administer funds, raise new funds and help with general advice on commercial aspects of the estate management. He is also involved with Harper Adams University College which specialises in courses with an agricultural or rural element. His involvement is not just at governor level but as a trustee of the development trust raising funds for new projects and buildings.

Karen Mercer is sponsorship co-ordinator for Pump Aid for the whole of the UK as well as being a trustee of the Sedbergh School Foundation.

Pump Aid works to relieve poverty in the rural communities of Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique. Using appropriate and sustainable technology, water pumps are installed to provide safe water for drinking and for micro-scale irrigation. Karen has spent time with the pump builders in Zimbabwe and has gained considerable working knowledge. Karen gives presentations in schools, churches and other organisations throughout the UK raising funds for Pump Aid .

Sedbergh School Foundation was set up in 2000 to provide long-term financial support for the school’s development plans. The Foundation’s primary objective is to support projects that cannot be funded through fee income. It aims to draw support from Old Sedberghians, parents and friends who want to assist the Governors to achieve their aim of making Sedbergh the premier co-educational boarding school in the north of England.
